How laparoscopic surgery works

The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia, so the patient is unconscious throughout surgery. Using a trocar, a narrow tube-like instrument, the surgeon gains access into the abdomen through the navel. A miniature camera, called a laparoscope, is inserted through the trocar, projecting a clear, magnified image of the patient's internal organs on a video monitor. The image on the video monitor provides the surgeon with a view of the inside of the abdomen as he operates.
